House on the Rock, Spring Green, Wisconsin

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

House on the Rock is one of the world's premier collections of schlock. If you can't find something here to amuse you, report to the undertaker.

The House

The Infinity Room is the most famous section of the house. It cantilevers out over the valley and tapers to a point, creating the illusion of infinite length. And for people with acrophobia, it probably seems infinitely long as well.
Reputedly, the House was built as a deliberate insult to Frank Lloyd Wright, whose center at Taliesin is only a few miles away.

The Museum

Some really odd firearms. Those pistols look inspired by old Warner Brothers cartoons.
Left and above: Faberge eggs

Below: Replica of an old-time main street.

The Nautical Wing

A nautical section houses model ships along a ramp that spirals around a huge diorama of a whale battling a giant squid. Because nothing says "landlocked Midwestern State" like a whale battling a giant squid.

Below: Christmas villages in an alcove at the top of the Nautical ramp. Because why not?

The Giant Carousel

One young visitor's reaction: "Daddy, there are naked ladies!"
